List Control Rudder Roll Stabilization
List Control Systems for
Ro-Ro cargo ships:
Control
of List during the loading and unloading of cargo can be particularly
acute for roll-on roll-off (RO-RO) ships. Cargo loading ramps,
particularly ramps at the stern (or bow) of the vessel must provide for
the twisting that occurs as the vessel's list increases. The Flume
HEEL-AWAY ® List Control System maintains the ship at zero list by
rapidly pumping ballast water between ballast tanks at the port and
starboard of the ship. The electronic control system (ECU) designed by
Schultz Engineering for Hyde Marine Systems, provides the list sensor
and the control algorithms and circuitry necessary to monitor and
control a high speed propeller pump and its associated hydraulic power
source.
Two versions of this system have been deployed: (1) a system designed for and provided exclusively to the US Navy for the Sealift series of cargo ships. (2) a commercial version that has been provided to certain DFDS Tor Lines ships that are in regular service between European ports.
